Henderson’s Commitment to Water Conservation: A Community Effort

Henderson’s Commitment to Water Conservation: A Community Effort

In response to prolonged drought conditions and declining levels at Lake Mead, the City of Henderson launched the H2One initiative, a comprehensive water conservation program aimed at reducing water usage and promoting sustainable practices among residents and businesses.

H2One: A Milestone in Conservation

Since its inception, H2One has achieved remarkable results:

  • Reduced citywide water use by more than one billion gallons in its first year.
  • Removed or converted 700,000 square feet of decorative grass to water-efficient landscaping.
  • Decreased water use at city facilities and parks by over 10%.

These efforts have not gone unnoticed. The American Planning Association awarded Henderson the 2026 Award for Excellence in Sustainability – Environment, Climate, and Energy, recognizing the city’s proactive approach to water conservation.

Community Participation: A Key to Success

The success of H2One is largely attributed to active community involvement. Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate through various means:

  • Water Smart Landscaping: Replacing decorative grass with drought-tolerant plants. The Southern Nevada Water Authority offers rebates of $5 per square foot for such conversions, with an additional $575 rebate available for qualifying Henderson residents.
  • Adhering to Watering Schedules: Following the regional watering schedule helps conserve water. Watering on Sundays is prohibited, and irrigation between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. from May 1 through August 31 is not allowed.
  • Reporting Water Waste: Residents can report instances of water waste, such as irrigation runoff or leaks, to the city’s Customer Care Center.

Looking Ahead: Sustainable Practices for the Future

Henderson’s commitment to water conservation extends beyond immediate measures. The city has integrated water conservation into its broader climate action strategy, focusing on sustainable water systems and community resilience. By continuing to implement innovative programs and encouraging community participation, Henderson aims to ensure a sustainable water future for all its residents.
